Flying Surveillance Beetles

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has researched the use of "flying" beetles as surveillance. They say the purpose of the research would be for search and rescue, and other missions. Michel Maharbiz, a researcher, is using the beetles normal abilities and technology to retrieve information from targets. The team of scientist have controlled a giant flower beetle with implanted electrodes and a radio receiver. They were able to send the information that the beetle collected and send it wirelessly back to a near by computer. They are able to completely control the beetle.

This is a huge step for science. They are able to completely control the insect, telling it when to take of or when to land. If they are able to control a beetle they soon will be able to control larger insects or animals.

But, this is also a scary thing. I feel like the government will be able to invade our privacy with even more ease. What would stop the government from making sure that people were not doing anything wrong. This new research could really benefit our society if it is used right.
