A Robotic Teacher in Japan

Technology has been advancing in leaps and bounds in the past ten years. New robotics and computer systems have been changing the way people do everyday things. Japan has been ahead of the curve in both computers and robotics. Now, they have unleashed a new technology on the world, a robot teacher. Named, Saya, this robot is capable of displaying six different human emotions such as surprise, fear, disgust, anger, happiness, and sadness. The idea of a robotic teacher is scary thought to many teachers and educators. However, this robot is not intended to replace teachers. It is only a classroom tool and isn’t actually capable of teaching a class…yet.

There are many theoretical possibilities for robots. We all know that back in the forties and fifties, people thought that by the year 2000 we would all be driving hover cars and would have robot slaves. With this new ‘teacher’, these fantasies are soon becoming less fantasy and more reality. In movies like “I Robot” and “Terminator”, robots are made to look like tools that can turn very evil without a watchful eye. This may be a proper representation of what may happen if we are not careful.

This video, found on YouTube, explains the robot very quickly. I feel that the comments are a good reaction to how society’s reaction to this machine. Many of them are just funny or joking responses. Some of them are actually people saying how wrong they think this is.
